For supporters of the Ancient Astronaut Hypothesis, these similarities raise an extraordinary possibility:

What if at least some ancient stories about gods descending from the sky were distorted memories of encounters with technologically advanced extraterrestrial visitors?

The idea became internationally famous through Swiss author Erich von Däniken, whose 1968 bestseller Chariots of the Gods? argued that visitors from space influenced ancient human civilization and that traces of those encounters survived in monuments, religious traditions and art. His books eventually sold tens of millions of copies and made ancient aliens one of the world's most recognizable alternative-history ideas. Von Däniken remained associated with the theory until his death in January 2026 at age 90.

Among the evidence repeatedly invoked are some of archaeology's most famous mysteries:

The pattern is undeniably fascinating.

But there is an important difference between saying:

“These things are strange and deserve explanation.”

and saying:

“Extraterrestrials are the best explanation.”

Archaeologists overwhelmingly place the ancient-astronaut hypothesis in the category of pseudoarchaeology, not because extraterrestrial life is considered impossible, but because the archaeological evidence cited for ancient visitation has not produced the kind of independently verifiable proof required to establish such an extraordinary historical event.

That does not make the subject uninteresting.

Quite the opposite.

Examining the famous cases reveals something arguably more impressive than alien intervention:

A hypothetical ancient observer, the argument goes, would not write:

“A spacecraft descended using controlled propulsion.”

They might instead describe:

a fiery chariot,

a radiant god,

or wheels turning in the heavens.

It is an intriguing thought experiment.

The difficulty is determining whether such descriptions actually record technology—or whether modern readers are projecting familiar machines backward onto religious and symbolic imagery.

The Nazca Lines: Ancient Runways for Visitors From the Sky?

Few archaeological sites fit the ancient-alien imagination as perfectly as Peru's Nazca Lines.

Across an enormous desert landscape are gigantic geometric shapes and representations of animals, plants and other figures.

Some stretch for kilometers.

From ground level, many are difficult to comprehend as complete designs.

To ancient-astronaut proponents, the obvious question is:

Why make enormous designs best appreciated from the sky if humans could not fly?

Von Däniken famously compared portions of the Nazca landscape to an airfield.

Long straight lines.

Geometric corridors.

Huge figures visible from above.

It seemed, to supporters, almost as though the landscape had been prepared for beings capable of aerial observation.

But You Do Not Need an Aircraft to Create the Nazca Lines

This is where archaeological evidence changes the picture.

The Nazca Lines were not carved using unknown technology.

Their construction technique is understood.

The builders removed dark, weathered stones from the desert surface, exposing lighter ground underneath. The extreme dryness of the environment then helped preserve the markings for centuries. UNESCO specifically describes this construction method and considers the geoglyphs an authentic product of pre-Columbian Andean societies.

Large geometric forms can also be laid out from ground level using surprisingly straightforward surveying methods.

Humans do not need to see an entire enormous design simultaneously in order to construct it accurately.

Modern engineers rarely stand far enough away to view an entire bridge or airport while building it either.

What Were the Nazca Lines Actually For?

Archaeologists not knowing every detail of a site's purpose does not mean they do not know who constructed it.

Even more impressively, the builders shaped joints into the stone.

Mortise-and-tenon joints connected uprights and lintels, while tongue-and-groove joints linked neighboring lintels—techniques conceptually similar to sophisticated woodworking.

That is advanced engineering.

But advanced human engineering.

Stonehenge Was Also Deliberately Aligned With the Sun

Stonehenge's astronomical qualities are genuine.

The structure's main axis aligns with important solar events.

English Heritage notes that the central sarsen architecture was carefully positioned relative to solstice sunrise and sunset. The wider landscape, including the Avenue leading toward the River Avon, also reflects this solar orientation.

This is often presented as another ancient mystery:

How could prehistoric people know astronomy?

But determining solstices does not require telescopes or spacecraft.

Rotate an image into a particular orientation and look at it through a technological lens, and something curious happens.

Pakal can appear to be leaning forward.

His hands seem positioned near controls.

Something appears in front of his face.

Complex shapes surround him.

Below him are forms that can be imagined as mechanical components.

Some viewers have interpreted the lower imagery as flames or exhaust.

Von Däniken famously presented the scene as resembling a person operating a spacecraft. Penn Museum's analysis of his argument summarizes exactly this reading: a figure manipulating spacecraft controls with what appears, to a technological observer, like propulsion beneath him.

It is an extraordinarily powerful example of visual pattern recognition.

It is also an excellent example of why context matters.

Maya Scholars See Something Very Different

Within Maya iconography, the elements surrounding Pakal are not isolated mechanical shapes.

They belong to a recognizable symbolic system.

Research on Palenque identifies the World Tree rising behind or around Pakal on the sarcophagus lid. The monument integrates themes of dynastic ancestry, death, regeneration and Maya cosmology.

Other imagery visible on the monument belongs to a wider visual vocabulary appearing elsewhere in Maya art.

This matters enormously.

Imagine archaeologists 2,000 years from now discovering a painting of a Christian saint surrounded by halos, clouds, wings and rays of light.

If they interpreted every form as mechanical hardware without studying Christian art, they could produce an impressive but completely misleading technological diagram.

The Pakal relief does not exist alone.

It belongs to a massive corpus of Maya:

Ezekiel describes an astonishing vision.

A violent wind.

A great cloud.

Fire.

Brightness.

Four strange living beings.

Wings.

Multiple faces.

And perhaps most famously:

wheels associated with other wheels.

The wheels shine.

They move in multiple directions.

Their rims are described as covered in eyes.

Above the beings is an expanse.

Above that is something resembling a throne.

It is easy to understand why a twentieth-century reader living after rockets, aircraft and mechanical engineering might ask:

Was Ezekiel trying to describe machinery using the vocabulary of the sixth century BCE?

Some ancient-astronaut interpretations have answered yes.

But Ezekiel’s Vision Already Has a Historical Religious Context

Biblical scholarship generally interprets Ezekiel's vision as a divine throne-chariot, not a technological eyewitness report.

The four living beings are later explicitly identified as cherubim, and the imagery has parallels with ancient Near Eastern traditions in which powerful hybrid creatures accompany or support divine and royal thrones.

The famous “wheel within a wheel” can be understood as an image emphasizing multidirectional movement. The scholarly analysis published by TheTorah.com notes that the wheels accompany the four-faced supernatural beings and are depicted as spiritually animated rather than ordinary engineering devices.

The larger point of the vision concerns divine presence and mobility.

Ezekiel is among Judean exiles in Babylonia.

The Jerusalem Temple lies far away.

The mobile throne communicates something theological:

the divine presence is not imprisoned within one building or one city.

That interpretation arises from the literary and cultural context of Ezekiel itself.

The spacecraft interpretation requires importing a modern technological framework into the text.

Could Ezekiel Still Have Seen Something Physical?

It is impossible to reconstruct exactly what subjective experience inspired an ancient visionary text.

To establish that Ezekiel observed extraterrestrial technology, we would need something beyond words that can be interpreted metaphorically in several ways.

Could There Have Been a Forgotten Global Civilization?

This question should be separated from ancient aliens.

It is entirely reasonable to investigate previously unknown human connections.

Our picture of ancient connectivity is constantly changing.

Large civilizations leave debris.

Tools.

Bones.

Human burials.

Food remains.

Trade networks.

The archaeological record is incomplete, sometimes severely so.

But an advanced civilization capable of globally influencing monumental construction would be expected to produce a substantial physical footprint.

The Greatest Problem With Ancient-Astronaut Reasoning

One of the most important critiques comes from the logic used to establish the claim.

Penn Museum's analysis of von Däniken's arguments identifies two recurring patterns.

One is essentially:

“That looks technological.”

“Archaeology cannot fully explain this, therefore extraterrestrials may have done it.”

The exact evidence could take many forms.

The crucial requirement is that it would have to survive:

  • peer review,
  • competing explanations.

If that evidence appeared, archaeology would change.

Science is not institutionally committed to a universe without extraterrestrials.

It is committed to evidence.

Scientists Already Search Seriously for Extraterrestrial Intelligence

Rejecting ancient-astronaut claims is not equivalent to declaring extraterrestrial intelligence impossible.

Von Däniken combined all of these elements brilliantly.

His books transformed archaeological ambiguity into a global detective story.

Whatever one thinks about his conclusions, his cultural influence is undeniable. His 1968 book launched an enormously successful career and helped turn ancient aliens into a permanent part of modern popular culture.

There Is Also an Uncomfortable Criticism of the Theory

Some archaeologists have argued that ancient-astronaut narratives can unintentionally diminish ancient peoples.

The pattern sometimes works like this:

A European castle?

Human engineering.

A Roman aqueduct?

Human engineering.

But an enormous monument in Egypt, Mesoamerica, Polynesia or the Andes?

Suddenly its builders supposedly needed outside help.

Penn Museum's critique of von Däniken emphasized that archaeological evidence often shows that communities possessed the technologies and organizational abilities required to create the works attributed to extraterrestrial intervention.

Ancient people were not primitive in the sense of being unintelligent.

Give thousands of skilled people decades of organization and even relatively simple technologies become enormously powerful.

The Real Ancient World Was More Impressive Than the Alien Version

There is an irony here.

Ancient-astronaut stories are supposed to make history more astonishing.

But sometimes they make ancient humans less astonishing.

Consider the alternative.

No extraterrestrials arrive.

No advanced civilization hands over blueprints.

No antigravity machine lifts the stones.

Instead:

Neolithic communities organize hundreds of workers.

They transport enormous stones across landscapes.

They shape them with hammerstones.

They develop sophisticated joints.

They align architecture with the annual movement of the Sun.

In Peru, generations transform a desert into a sacred landscape visible across kilometers using nothing more exotic than surveying knowledge, organization and the removal of dark surface stones.

At Palenque, Maya artists combine dynastic history, cosmology, writing and religious symbolism into one extraordinarily dense funerary monument.

Those achievements do not become less impressive once we understand them.

They become more impressive.

Archaeology Has Not Solved Everything

None of this means archaeology possesses complete answers.

It does not.

The exact functions of some Nazca geoglyphs remain debated.

Questions about Stonehenge continue evolving as new excavation and scientific analysis provide information. English Heritage explicitly notes that many questions remain unanswered despite centuries of research.

Interpretations of religious texts change.

Maya epigraphy continues advancing.
