August 9, 1945: When “Fat Man” Exploded Over Nagasaki and Changed History Forever
At 11:02 a.m. on August 9, 1945, an American B-29 bomber released a plutonium atomic bomb over Nagasaki, Japan.
The weapon was code-named “Fat Man.”
It exploded approximately 500 meters above the city with a force equivalent to roughly 20–21 kilotons of TNT. In seconds, intense heat, blast pressure and nuclear radiation devastated the Urakami district and killed tens of thousands of people.
